An Introduction to Scopolamine
Ohh man I don’t feel so good, I am all nauseous, and I feel like I am going to vomit all over my laptop. Uhhhh I just feel like I am on a boat moving up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down, (everyone together now ) down and up. I know what I can do to feel better . . . I will just take some Scopolamine and feel better. I mean, the National Institute of Health claims that it is perfect when you have motion sickness so I am going to take it and I hope the side effects are not as bad as this stomach ache… Alright alright alright, I am starting to feel a lot better; I am feeling kind of loose and mellow. Wait, what do you say? You want to know all my secrets? Well, have I mentioned I use to be afraid of IMAX screens falling on me as a child, and that if I get over stimulated on anything I have to check the L on my hand to know which my left is and right. Also, my back account number is . . .
For those of you who know where I am going with that I did not realize how far I could have taken this joke initially by divulging personal information on the internet, which can only be so funny up to a point. For those who don’t know what I am getting at, let me introduce you to something pretty fucked up.
What can be more terrifying than acting against your own desires from some external substance? “But Chris,” you are thinking after only making it through the beginning of the post and already forming an opinion, “We already have substances like alcohol that makes me call my ex, subjugate woman, steal and sniff dog toys, and drive Jesus’ crucifixion nails through my small intestines to prove my spiritual loyalty supersedes my need for Valium. Acting against my own desires because of some chemical is nothing new.” Well fellow reader, whom I am trying to alienate before I even get started, ingestion of alcohol does not remove control over yourself it just lowers your inhibition to stop yourself from raping your innards with pseudo-divine artifacts. Thus, it is not what I am talking about and we will carry on.
Scopolamine, or more commonly known in illicit drug circles as Devil’s Breath, is a pant that can be used to produce a powdered drug. This drug is highly valuable within the criminal element to turn the victim into a mindless zombie bending at the will of those around you. It is reported once you are dosed with the drug you are awake, mentally coherent, and acting normal to any onlooker but you have lost total control over your free will and become susceptible to external influence or manipulation.
Scopolamine is a plant that grows in Colombia, which you can see here to help all potential criminals spot what they need to pull off the sweet sweet score.
Once you are on the devil’s breath a person can ask you to empty your bank account, or even ask you to help carry everything in your apartment out to their van and you would not so much as put up a fight. Which is not to say you do not have the strength too, you just can’t because you can’t control yourself when on the devil’s breath and you don’t realize you are doing anything wrong. Then sometime later you wake up from your night of criminal debauchery without a single memory as to what happened, what you did, or who did this to you. Something like this really intrigues me, not for the concept of using it or at least admitting to using it on the internet, but simply for the fact of its neurological and physical reaction to the drug. It is comparable to a date rape drug but instead of passing out you are up and awake, with the possible side effect of hallucinating, but you are not in control while you’re awake! That is hard for me to even think about. It almost seems counter intuitive to think one is awake and cognitive yet without any cognitive control over your actions. Sure if you were put under with the drug that is one thing, but it is not the case which provides an interesting topic of free will within our universe and the possible rejection of free will based on a physical substance that can block neurological synapses and make us into Oedipusian fatalist zombies, determined by external persuasion from the God like hand of those manipulating you.
On a side note for all my conspiracy theorist fans who are shaking in excitement at the fact they have to get to some Blackhawk Libertarian website and discuss how the government is putting this in our water. There are documents cases of the CIA in the 1960s trying to use this drug, as well as Secret Czech Police, and I am sure many more. Now I feel it is my duty to mention that you can’t provide mass quantities of this because too much inhalation of the Devil’s Breath will kill you in less than 20 minutes. Which provides an nonredeemable quality to this alright terrible drug. I am just making sure I don’t cause a person to believe the government is out to get them with 12 secret bankers controlling the entire world’s political and economic interest by secretly controlling all of us with this drug. Of course that sounds like an interesting movie. "This summer get ready for an exciting cinema experience when you wake up on a park bench after forgetting that you just voted for... THE REPUBLICANS."
To further grasp what the effects of what Scopolamine can do in greater detail you can check out the excellent Vice documentary that was posted about a year ago. See, as an author you must understand your audience, and since I feel my audience would love to do extensive research to see if I am making this up or not just like a man from Mississippi in the 1950s enjoying a tender kiss from his fellow male Ku Klux Klan counterpart. Thus, you have a link to a better explanation of the use of Scopolamine for criminal uses, and it proves I did not make this up or get this story from unrepeatable sources. This way you cans study up on it more before you read the second part to this post. This was simply just a short introduction into a two part post where I will discuss whether the existence and ramifications of Devil’s Breath disproves that absolute nature of free will based on the fact that there are such neurological effects from this drug that remove our controlled cognition I want to know if free will exist could it be taken away from us, and does that mean our free will is a physical part of us that can be manipulated with drugs? Or maybe I will prove none of you have free will and you will be determined to read up on why when the next post comes out soonish.
